TESCO

As part of a master’s project, our team of postgraduate UX engineers developed a business concept and service to address the environmental impact of single-use plastics while considering the cost-of-living crisis. Through user interviews, surveys, and autoethnographic studies, we identified key consumer concerns around waste reduction and affordability.

The result was a third-party service designed for major chain stores like Tesco, offering a "refillable range" of store-branded products. This service allows customers to select refillable household products during their online purchases, which are delivered to their homes via low carbon emission transport, significantly reducing both waste and environmental impact.

To bring this concept to life, wireframes were built to model Tesco’s current shopping app, integrating the refillable product range into the existing user interface.

This design allows customers to choose sustainable options with the same ease as traditional online shopping, creating a familiar and user-friendly experience while promoting eco-conscious choices.

UX PROCESSES

User Research & Persona Development:

Conducted user interviews and surveys to understand the challenges and preferences related to online shopping for refillable products.

Developed user personas to represent different customer segments (e.g., eco-conscious shoppers, busy parents, and regular Tesco customers).

User Journey Mapping:

Mapped out the user journey from discovering refillable products on the Tesco website to placing an order and managing refills.

Identified key user needs, frustrations, and motivations at each stage of the shopping and refill process.

Wireframes & Prototyping:

Designed low-fidelity wireframes to structure the user interface for easy navigation, product browsing, and seamless ordering of refillable products.

Created high-fidelity, interactive prototypes using Figma to demonstrate core features like product selection, subscription management, and refill reminders.

Usability Testing:

Facilitated usability testing sessions to evaluate the user experience, focusing on product discovery, order placement, and the refill process.

Collected and analysed feedback to refine the design, ensuring an intuitive and user-friendly shopping experience.
