WEATHERALL
Developed as part of a master’s project by a team of postgraduate UX engineers, the WeatherAll concept addresses the needs of commuters facing unexpected weather. Strategically placed at transport hubs and high foot-traffic areas, the system allows users to easily rent and return smart umbrellas through a mobile app.
The project was informed by user surveys and interviews, guiding both the app’s design and smart umbrella technology, which features a heated handle for cold temperatures and an interchangeable canopy for rain or heat. The umbrella also includes a long-lasting battery, ensuring reliable use of the heated handle throughout the day.
In addition to the product design, the team developed a business canvas model to pitch the project in a mock presentation, detailing the value proposition, customer segments, and revenue streams. This comprehensive approach highlights a user-centered, sustainable solution tailored for urban commuters.
UX PROCESSES
User Research & Persona Development:
-
Conducted user interviews and surveys to understand pain points related to unexpected rain in urban areas.
-
Created personas representing target users (e.g., commuters, tourists, event-goers).
User Journey Mapping:
-
Mapped out the journey of users from discovering the service to renting and returning an umbrella.
-
Identified user needs, frustrations, and motivations at each step.
Wireframes & Prototyping:
-
Designed low-fidelity wireframes to plan the user interface and layout for easy access to nearby umbrellas.
-
Created interactive prototypes to demonstrate key app functionalities such as umbrella rental, location tracking, and payment.
Usability Testing:
-
Conducted usability testing sessions to validate key features like rental flow, umbrella station map, and payment process.
-
Collected feedback to refine and optimise the user experience.
